Caffeine, Inspiration, Quotes, Writing

I wanna hold your hand

Distractions on the horizon…

I was hunkering down armed with my coffee mug, laptop and boatload of freshly brewed inspiration, when I lost focus like an Ostrich who spotted a shiny object buried in the sand. I did my regular morning routine of checking emails, researching agents, catching up on publishing news like this fun interview here and posting quotes on Twitter. Yet something still seemed off. I couldn’t get into my ‘zone.’

What’s wrong with me today?

I couldn’t wrap my head around what was holding me up from writing. Usually I just sit at the computer and work through ‘writer’s block’ or ‘lack of inspiration,’ but today was different. Today Jack London would be throwing his hands in the air disgusted by my lack of clubbing inspiration over the head. My coffee was untouched, so blaming caffeine for my inability to concentrate was not going to happen. Damn! So what was it? More importantly, how do I snap out of it? I surfed the web for inspiration and this is what I found:

“For Attractive lips, speak words of kindness, For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people, For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry, For Beautiful hair, let a child run their fingers through it once a day, For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.”
-Audrey Hepburn

It was not at all what I was looking for, and yet it was everything I was looking for. So fellow Twitter [and online] friends, if you’re feeling a little distracted too, cut yourself some slack. You’re doing a great job. Allow yourself a little distraction to recharge your batteries. You deserve it. And who knows… maybe while you’re off being distracted, you’ll find the greatest inspiration yet.

Now it’s time for me to get back to writing and my coffee! 🙂
